Textile Waste

The fashion industry generates 92 million tons of textile waste annually. That's equivalent to a garbage truck full of clothes dumped every second. Most of it is entirely preventable.

Fit connection: A garment that fits gets worn until it wears out. A garment that doesn't fit gets discarded — often after one or two wears.

Where Waste Comes From

Overproduction

Fast fashion brands deliberately overproduce — the business model depends on scarcity illusion and constant "new drop" urgency. Unsold inventory is routinely destroyed to preserve brand value rather than discounted or donated.

Returns

Up to 40% of online fashion purchases are returned. Most returned items cannot be resold at full price — they are liquidated, sent to discount markets, or landfilled. Each return also doubles the carbon footprint of a purchase.

Poor Fit

Sizing inconsistency is the #1 driver of returns. A consumer who orders three sizes to find one that fits creates three times the packaging waste, three times the transport emissions, and two guaranteed discarded garments.

Synthetic fibers that can't be recycled

Blended fabrics (e.g. polyester-cotton) are nearly impossible to separate for recycling. The fashion industry's shift toward synthetics has created a waste stream that current recycling infrastructure cannot handle.

The Fit-Waste Connection

Accurate sizing is the most direct intervention against fashion waste. When a garment fits, consumers wear it. When it doesn't, it enters a discard cycle that is costly, carbon-intensive, and largely invisible to the brands that caused it.

This is why PWW evaluates sizing accuracy as a core sustainability metric — not just a convenience feature. Brands that publish accurate size charts, provide proportional grading, and maintain consistency across collections are reducing their waste footprint with every garment sold.

What You Can Do

Buy for fit first

A well-fitting item in a neutral color gets worn more than a trendy item that never quite feels right. Prioritize fit over trend.

Use PWW fit profiles

Check a brand's size consistency before buying online. Our fit profiles flag brands with sizing issues that lead to returns.

Repair before replacing

A torn seam or missing button is not a reason to discard a garment. Basic repairs extend garment life by years.

Sell or donate before discarding

Platforms like ThredUp, Poshmark, and local consignment shops keep garments in circulation — especially quality natural fiber pieces.
