Where Fashion's Carbon Comes From

Fiber production & manufacturing (upstream)

Synthetic fiber production (polyester, nylon) is extremely energy-intensive — derived from fossil fuels and produced in coal-powered factories across Asia. Cotton farming requires energy-intensive irrigation, fertilizers, and pesticides. This upstream production accounts for ~70% of fashion's total emissions.

Global supply chain transport

Garments travel an average of 25,000 miles from fiber origin to consumer. Raw materials ship to spinning mills, then to fabric manufacturers, then to cut-and-sew factories, then to distribution centers, then to retailers. Each leg has a carbon cost.

Returns logistics

An item purchased online and returned travels warehouse → consumer → warehouse → liquidator → discount retailer — often across multiple countries. A garment returned once can double or triple its original carbon footprint before reaching a final owner.

End-of-life incineration

Unsold or returned inventory is routinely incinerated — a direct, high-carbon disposal method that converts embodied energy (the carbon cost of production) into atmospheric emissions with zero recovery.

The Fit-Carbon Connection

Every returned item in fashion represents a carbon-positive purchase that became carbon-negative. The production emissions already happened. The return adds transport, repackaging, and often re-manufacturing costs.

Sizing inconsistency is the #1 reason for apparel returns. A brand that publishes accurate size charts and proportional sizing directly reduces the carbon footprint of every purchase — not through offsets or marketing, but through eliminating unnecessary logistics from the supply chain entirely.

Choose natural fibers

Organic cotton, wool, linen and hemp have significantly lower production emissions than polyester and nylon. They also biodegrade, removing the incineration end-of-life from the equation.

Buy fewer, better pieces
